There are said to be 78 million Americans who are considered part of the ‘baby boomer’ generation that were born between 1946 and 1964. The first of those folks to reach age 62 and to apply for Social Security benefits did so last month and that symbolizes the opening of the spigot. Cash will now be flowing from our Social Security Fund at a faster pace than ever before and it will continue to do so for the next 18 years before returning to its more usual pace! Let’s just hope that our leaders find a way to make/keep the system solvent during that time!

As part of the baby boomer generation, those who are now turing 50 years of age are now beginning to think about their dream retirement. You know who they are…. the people who are shocked when, shortly after turning 50, they get their AARP card in the mail. That event is very significant and eye-opening to many people. While they may not have given much thought to “retirement’ up until now, it is truly a shock to be invited to join a retired persons association. For many, this event causes them to begin to think about their mortality and to start to dream about their future retirement lifestyle.
