A medical dictionary is a must-have for doctors or anyone in the medical profession. It defines and explains most every medical term. It’s common for a book like this to have a glossary so the terms can be found. Internet versions are even faster to search.

Some people believe that there needed to be average Joe versions of a medical dictionary. That is, something aimed at the regular person. A number of popular websites have been developed along these lines. They contain not only the definitions of many medical terms, but searches of conditions based on symptoms. Someone could look up headache and runny nose, for example, to determine that they have a common cold.

People have to be careful when using this medical dictionary made for the common person. Diagnosis is one of the most difficult parts of medicine. One set of symptoms could indicate hundreds of conditions. Mistakes are common. A chest pain could mean heart attack. It could be a pulled muscle. Always consult a doctor if experiencing chest pains.

Sometimes people panic when they use this type of medical dictionary. People also start questioning their doctors. But having some information when speaking with a doctor is a good thing.

For example there is a cancer cluster. This is when a group of people in a geographic area in a specific period of time have more cases of cancer than would be expected. If such a cancer cluster exists then medical personnel begin looking for outside causes.
