Retirement Is Not A Trip Of A Lifetime But A Trip For The Rest Of Your Lifetime

Retirement planning, Is it a waste of time if you don’t get to retirement? We all know someone who never had the chance to do any of the things they wanted to do when they retired but is it better to plan for retirement or death? Tell me, what is the point in putting off the things we like to do now when we don’t even know what is ahead 5 minutes from now? Could this possibly be the underlying reason we find it so hard to plan for the future?

Most of our life is spent doing the things that stress us out, with an attitude that says, the longer we live the better life will get and mostly without changing anything. (Is this pure optimism or what would you call it?) looking back, that really was the easy way out. Just work, work and things will be OK. Many spend their lives making decisions about business and family but never about me/us. Why is it so hard relating to the idea that what truly matters in life is how much enjoyment you have here and not how long you are here?

All it takes is a decision do things differently and the will to do them. The next thing you know, life has turned around and you’re doing the things you enjoy. Simply make a choice to live a life that is full of as many enjoyable situations as possible and then act on that decision. The sooner in life that decision is made the better. The Baby Boomer generation should make the decision to change NOW. Generally the Baby Boomer generation has spent their years of work making ends meet, raising kids and saving for tomorrow without much thought about tomorrow. Guess what? Tomorrow is just around the corner.

Retirement is not a trip of a lifetime but a trip for the rest of your lifetime. Here is a question for you. Have you ever taken a trip without any plans as to where you wanted to go, whether it was to the beach, mountains, visit family, etc.? Maybe just take a trip to watch television and read the newspaper? How long should a trip like that last? How many years could you spend on a TV/newspaper trip? This would probably be a trip to be cut rather short and if we are talking about the rest of a lifetime, that too would likely be cut short.

Retirement is a trip and here are some of the questions to ask. Firstly, can I afford it? Some suggest $600,000.00 is a reasonable figure to expect to spend during retirement. There are many financial planners today that can help with that question.

When I go on this trip, what do I want to do? What do I like to do? Where do I want to do it? Consider what to do with the extra free time. Remember to plan for the same number of hours that were spent in the work day and if you use hobbies, add the time you now spend on your hobbies. There are so many possibilities for free time activity that you will need to find something of special interest. Authorities tell us we need more than one hobby or activity. Many of these interesting activities can also bring in additional streams of income.

Baby Boomers, retirement will be wonderful if you plan for it now.
