Volunteering in Retirement – Its Good For Your Soul!

Volunteering in Retirement – Its Good For Your Soul!

You have probably spent a lot of time helping others in your life! As part of an active retirement, many seniors find that volunteering represents a fulfilling and happy part of their current lives.

Do you belong to a church, alumni organization, or other social group? You probably get many appeals for time and money. While many of us can’t afford to make all of the financial donations we’d like, time is something we may have more of then ever. After retirement many of us find that we’ve got more time to spend doing things for those outside of our families.

Where do you find a volunteer opportunity that is a good fit with your interests and knowledge? The possibilities are almost endless! Here are a few ideas.

Are you now, or were you once, an entrepreneur? The Small Business Administration wants you! This federal program supports those who want to start businesses. Experienced small business owners are paired with people interested in similar fields, and act as mentors. What a great way for Over 55s to pass on their expertise!

Do you have a hobby that you are particularly good at and knowledgeable about? Everyone from your church to hospital to community center would love to take advantage of your skills! Gardeners can help out at the local community gardens. Cooks are always needed at soup kitchens or shelters. Art lovers can give tours at the local museum.

Are you particularly good with kids, or the elderly? These are two populations who always need extra attention. Meals on wheels can be a lot of fun, as you meet the people in your neighborhood. Foster grandparents can make a huge difference in the lives of disadvantaged kids. No matter what your interest, there is a volunteer opportunity out there that you will be good at!

We have a lot to be thankful for. This generation of aging citizens enjoys a greater level of health and independence than any other in history. From baby boomers to those in their golden years, older citizens around the world are generous, capable people. Go to your local library or community center, or look online. You are sure to find volunteer work, which will enrich your life.
